Limestone cliffs

Emblematic of Bonifacio, the limestone cliffs are to be admired and contemplated, but also experienced! From the Campu Rumanilu path, from the sea or from the Citadelle, discover a typically Bonifacian landscape at its best in the early morning or at sunset.

Campu Rumanilu,
above the cliffs

Ideally located near the St Roch chapel, the start of the mythical Campu Rumanilu trail begins with a superb view of the Diu Grossu, or grain of sand, so photogenic. It continues along a paved path that becomes a spectacular trail. You’re literally walking on top of the cliffs. And the more you walk, the more you’re seduced by the surrounding vegetation, which makes you forget the altitude and feel alone in the world.

Listen: the sound of the wind, the birds and… the whispers of amazed walkers. The further you walk, the further away the Citadelle becomes, revealing a few more secrets about its configuration, colors and skyline. Cautiously, you’ll be irresistibly drawn to the sea below. And by the horizon, where Sardinia stands out, slightly blurred on hot days.

“In thirty minutes you can complete this route, in an hour and a half you’ll reach the Pertusatu lighthouse, which will lead you on to other adventures”.

Cliffs by the sea

There are many ways to get out to sea from Bonifacio harbor. A one-hour or one-and-a-half-hour trip. Day cruises, collective transport, small yachts or catamarans – whatever you choose (you can also opt for a kayak trip), you’ll be sailing along the cliffs. Whatever the moment, you’ll be amazed. A little extra: the sea will also give you a different view of the Escalier Roy d’Aragon, a structure that has yet to reveal all its mysteries.

Like all natural wonders, Bonifacio’s cliffs are fragile. At over 100 metres high, it’s important to be careful and to follow the marked path. As far as the flora and fauna are concerned, please do not pick the flowers that appear in spring, and do not shout to disturb the birds nesting in the groves.

The Citadel, mirror of the cliffs

Who’s looking at whom? Bonifacio’s Citadel not only overlooks the cliffs, it also scrutinizes them. So, from Place Manichella to the Convent of St. Francis, take a stroll through the upper town and take in the limestone lace unfolding before your eyes.

Lace or velvet, linen or white, the cliffs of Bonifacio are infinitely varied depending on the weather and the time of day.

Get up early,
go to bed late

Are you an early riser? More of a night owl? If so, you’re in luck. At dawn, you can hear the birds singing, the insects rubbing and see the light rising over the limestone mass. At the end of the day, the sun continues to glow in the distance. Whether you’re looking for the finishing touch to your visit, or the start of a day in the citadel, the cliffs will leave you with unforgettable memories.
