Bonifacio, Town of Art and History

With the Ville d’art et d’histoire label since 2019, Bonifacio, a sentinel on the Mediterranean, brings its heritage to life. Thanks to their preservation and enhancement, the historic monuments and the medieval citadel as a whole tell their own story to Bonifacians and visitors alike, in complementary ways.

Stroll and lose yourself in the Citadelle

Stroll (and get lost?) around the citadel, take in the sights from the top of the Escalier du Roy d’Aragon, the esplanades of the Bastion de l’Étendard, discover the diversity of the religious heritage, take part in heritage-related events – all this is possible most of the year. Guided tours, exhibitions, the Festival of Lights, the Contemporary Art Biennial, local gastronomy, religious traditions, heritage trails… all combine to make your stay in the medieval city a unique experience.

Art and history are palpable with every step you take in the citadel. Look up, touch the walls, take note of the architectural details that are discreet but present at the turn of a café or restaurant.

Heritage events

Thanks to the diversity of its events, Bonifacio offers a complementary approach to heritage. A major participant in the European Heritage Days, each year the town offers a rich program of discoveries, exhibitions, meetings and original tours. But Bonifacio also boasts a wealth of intangible heritage, notably through its landscapes, flora and fauna. The spring event, A Viranata, highlights these treasures. Finally, in summer, the De Renava collective offers an approach to contemporary digital art through artistic installations in the town’s unique heritage sites with the De Renava Biennial.

Heritage activities

Heritage is alive and well in Bonifacio. Whether it’s thanks to the guides who offer regular tours of the Upper Town, or one-off themed tours. And thanks to fun activities that bring families together, such as escape games, booklets and the Pif Gadget application. The Bonifacio Autrement heritage trail is also a great way to learn about Bonifacio’s history, with interactive terminals scattered around the Upper Town and the Marine.
