Bonifacio owes its renown to the majestic citadel that was built in the 9th century by Boniface II of Tuscany. Its Genoese influence and vivid colours evoke the traditions of a region which has managed to protect its historical and cultural heritage, while at the same time ensuring its economic development. The "Haute-Ville" (or Upper Town) which has most of the town's heritage of monuments and buildings, is built on a limestone peninsula 1,500 metres long, and 200 metres wide. Overlooking the straight, it juts out over the sea for 50 or 60 metres and dominates the Marina.
