Holy Week is an important time for the people of Bonifacio. Celebrated throughout Corsica, it is all the more intense in the citadel of the Extreme South, where 5 brotherhoods are represented.

A brotherhood is a religious association made up of lay people who devote themselves to pious practices or charitable works. Brotherhoods are symbols of conviviality and exchange. The two oldest were founded in the 13th century, the most recent in 1893.

On Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, you can watch each of the brotherhoods stroll through the narrow streets of Bonifacio. Our expert guide, Pierre Gazano, will be on hand to tell you all about the history of these brotherhoods which, eight centuries on, continue to keep alive the emblematic tradition of processions and the astonishing celebration of the Office of Darkness.
