Explore the powder shops in the Upper Town!
As a regular visitor to Michel Tercé's tours, did you think you knew all the secrets of Bonifacio's military history? Well, think again!
This February, our indefatigable retired lieutenant-colonel invites you to rediscover an almost forgotten military heritage.
Discover the North gunpowder magazine! Visible near the marine cemetery, this square building, surrounded by a protective wall, was designed to withstand enemy fire. Its underground section reveals a vast storage area capable of holding nearly 20 tonnes of explosives, with a 45-metre-long gallery, an ingenious system for draining off rainwater.
Another original and little-forgotten building is the gunpowder magazine located near the former Chapelle Sainte-Marie-Madeleine. Carved into the cliff, this now inconspicuous place was still in use until 1989!
These buildings, both complex and strategic, are unusual places just waiting to be rediscovered and visited for an afternoon.
Practical information:
- Meeting point at 2.30pm, in front of the former Chapelle Sainte-Marie-Madeleine (Maison des Confréries)
- Free admission
- Reservation required
- Visit limited to 15 people
- Duration: 2 hours
- Not recommended for people suffering from claustrophobia
- Headlamps available on site
- Bring suitable footwear
The tour may be cancelled in the event of bad weather.
