The Bonifacio mountainA place of spirituality

Trinity Hermitage

The Ermitage de la Trinité, just 10 minutes from Bonifacio’s citadel, is a deeply spiritual and emblematic site in the Bonifacio countryside.

Commonly referred to as the “mountain of Bonifacio” due to its location at an altitude of 200 meters, this site offers exceptional views of the Bouches de Bonifacio and the indented coastline of Sardinia.

Corsica's "Finis Terrae

At the end of a winding road through the maquis, between juniper and heather trees, the Ermitage de la Trinité appears in a peaceful atmosphere amidst centuries-old olive trees, where spirituality and serenity mingle. As soon as you step into this haven of peace, the ancient monastery invites you to meditate and marvel.

“A sanctuary, a place of worship and tradition, a den of bandits, a land of shepherds and peasants, an embodiment of the fragile beauty of the Bonifacian landscape, the Ermitage de la Trinité is a landmark of Corsican heritage, well worth a visit.”

A place so dear to Bonifaciens

The spirit of the place is inhabited by ancestral practices: initially pagan, dating back to the 4th century, followed by the installation of an early Christian cult. Archaeological and historical research has demonstrated the presence of hermits, occupying the caves dug into the granite above a first ancient chapel, of which almost nothing remains. The present-day church dedicated to the Très-Sainte-Trinité is attested to in ancient texts as early as the 13th century. Altered many times by the Benedictines and Franciscans, Capuchin monks settled here in the 19th century and founded the convent adjoining the church building.

Today, the site is alive with pilgrimages and processions in June and September, when Corsicans and Bonifacians celebrate their age-old attachment to this exceptional site.

A remarkable, protected landscape

Granite meets limestone

This place steeped in history, so dear to the hearts of Bonifacians, is sublimated by the grandiose panorama that unfolds for every visitor over the Bay of Paragan. This is where Bonifacio’s limestone begins, contrasting with the granitic intensity of the Capu di Fenu coastline, with the city of cliffs as a backdrop.

The strength of the landscape here is expressed in geological variations. The view from this natural promontory is fascinating. You can contemplate all the beauty of Bonifacia’s hinterland.

A jewel of biodiversity

A springtime stroll

Renowned for its floral biodiversity, the Ermitage de la Trinité is the ideal starting point for a stroll to the Capu di Fenu lighthouse. Dotted with a variety of botanical species (myrtle, rosemary, rockrose, etc.), this walk is particularly enchanting at the dawn of spring, when nature wakes up and invites you to enjoy a unique sensory experience.
