Walking above the cliffs

Campu Rumanilu trail

Whether you’re a walker or not, when you visit Bonifacio, you absolutely can’t miss this exceptional walk. After discovering the town and its medieval heritage, this trail offers a quick tour of an exceptional natural heritage. Eighty meters above the cliffs.

Nature just a stone's throw from the citadel

Ideally located near the Saint-Roch chapel, the start of the mythical Campu Rumanilu trail begins with a superb view of the Diu Grossu, or grain of sand, so photogenic. It continues along a paved path that becomes a spectacular trail. You’re literally walking above the cliffs. And the more you walk, the more you’re seduced by the surrounding vegetation, which makes you forget the altitude and feel alone in the world.

Listen: the sound of the wind, the birds and… the whispers of amazed walkers. The further you walk, the further away the citadel becomes, revealing a few more secrets about its configuration, colors and skyline. If you’re careful, you’ll be irresistibly drawn to the sea below. And by the horizon, where Sardinia stands out, slightly blurred on hot days.

Campu rumanilu” doesn’t (conditionally) mean “Roman camp”, but “rosemary fields”.

A place apart

Here, everything has been carved by water and wind for millennia. That’s what makes this trail so special. Wild. Changing. It’s also why walking on Campu Rumanilu must be done with humility and discretion. Many birds nest in the surrounding shrubs. The flora is sometimes endemic and rare. Let’s protect it. Take the time to stop and listen to the sound of the wind, always present at this altitude. The sound of birds chirping in response to each other. The view of Sardinia, just a stone’s throw away. And, above all, the different views of the citadel, depending on the time of day, the weather and where you are along the way.

If we had to recommend a season to discover Campu Rumanilu, it would obviously be spring, with its promise of flowering groves and returning birds. For nature photographers, the spot is perfect in May. But beware: it’s forbidden to pick the vegetation that grows here. Look with your eyes and immortalize with your camera or smartphone.

Dare to take a photo of Bonifacio!

The view of the citadel with its houses overhanging the cliff is a cliché that is often seen when it comes to Bonifacio. This photo was taken from Campu Rumanilu. And what if you, too, tried to find the right frame to give your own point of view on the cliff city? Be daring!

All the essence of Bonifacio in one photo… It’s hard to beat the balance of the place and the poetry of such a view.

Get up early,
go to bed late

Campu Rumanilu is never more vibrant than in the early morning or at sunset. Whether you’re on your own, in love or on a hike, make the most of these moments when the trail is virtually yours alone. You’ll bring back lasting memories. And probably a few hundred photos you won’t be able to sort out on your phone. These times of day are all the more propitious in summer, when the temperature is milder.
