A journey through time

Strolling around Bonifacio

Stroll through the narrow streets of the citadel, as if you were discovering an open-air museum, and take a trip back in time… Whether you prefer the historic heart of the citadel or the thousand-year-old town overlooking the cliffs of Bonifacio, you’re sure to fall under the spell of this maze of charming cobbled streets, which always lead to a small square where you can enjoy a good meal, a church, a viewpoint, or buildings with slender facades…

The ingenuity of water catchment

The thousand-year-old fortress

Drop the buckets and shovels: visit Bonifacio’s Upper Town, a thousand-year-old fortress overlooking the sea. Lose yourself in the narrow streets, with no real purpose other than to marvel… Many streets are topped by buttresses and arches with slate gutters, linking the neighboring houses to the church of Sainte-Marie-Majeure. These arches served as aqueducts and were part of an ingenious system for collecting rainwater to fill a cistern. Take your time to discover this remarkable heritage.

Restaurants of Haute-Ville

Intimate terraces, plazas above the cliffs, breathtaking views: the restaurants of Haute-Ville are waiting to satisfy your taste buds and… your eyes. Confidential addresses or guidebook references, you’re bound to find the place you’re looking for. Whether you’re looking for Corsican, Italian, fusion, bistro or gourmet cuisine, there’s no need to panic: the brands complement each other and adapt to your tastes. All you have to do is choose.

All moods

Bonifacio Marina

The port of Bonifacio shines with all its ambiances: fishing port, yachting, sailing, restaurants, shops, hotels, parties… you could easily spend a day in this part of town without getting bored. Just follow the very maritime rhythm of the place. All the more so, as it’s from the Marina that you can set off on one of the SPMB’s famous sea excursions, discovering the gully and cliffs or, further afield, the Lavezzi Islands.

The walkway

While you can link the Marina and Haute-Ville by taking the little train, you can also do a bit of sport and walk up the chemin de ronde. This fortified watchtower is partly covered, with loopholes and machicolations. It’s a great way to step back into the past and, in summer, enjoy some cool shade.

Quality shopping

You won’t be leaving Bonifacio without having unearthed some handcrafted items to offer on your return: knives, coral or locally-designed jewelry, paintings by local artists, as well as a whole range of “made in Corsica” decorative objects from certain boutiques, the hardest part will be choosing. If you add to this the gastronomic products you’ll find in local grocery stores, we feel sorry for the headache of packing your suitcase on the way home!
