what is it?
The ‘Tourisme & Handicap’ state-awarded label identifies tourist establishments that are committed to providing a welcoming environment and services tailored to people with disabilities. It serves as a reliable guide to help you plan your holiday with greater peace of mind and choose places that meet your needs.
The scheme takes into account four categories of disability: hearing, intellectual, mobility and visual. It is based on specific criteria relating, in particular, to the accessibility of the premises, the quality of the welcome, the information provided and the services on offer, with a view to promoting maximum independence.
Awarding the label is based on a voluntary application by the establishment and an assessment of its accessibility. More than just a symbol, it therefore reflects a concrete commitment to making tourism more accessible to all.
Our accessible tourist information centres
The Bonifacio Municipal Tourist Office welcomes you to two tourist information centres located in the Upper Town: the Citadel Tourist Office at 2 Rue Fred Scamaroni and the Bastion of the Standard tourist information centre at the Porte de Gênes.
Both locations are accessible to people with reduced mobility, and our staff are on hand to assist you as required.
However, the layout of the Upper Town means you should plan your visit in advance: some streets are steep and cobbled, and from May to September, the Citadel may, at certain times, become a pedestrian-only zone, with no drop-off points available. Parking spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility are available near the offices.
At the Citadel Tourist Office, the nearest disabled parking is on Avenue de la Carotola, approximately 150 metres away. The route may include gradients of over 10 per cent. Very soon, you’ll be able to use a bell to alert our visitor advisers to your presence; they’ll be able to help you open the door if necessary.
At the Bastion of the Standard office, situated in a pedestrian zone, the nearest disabled parking is on Avenue de la Carotola, about 250 metres away, where, again, the gradients may exceed 10 per cent. A doorbell will soon allow you to contact the team, who will, if necessary, set up a removable ramp to facilitate access to the office.
Services tailored to your needs
Our holiday advisers are aware of and trained in how to assist people with disabilities. They can provide you with information on accessibility at the various sites in Bonifacio, parking and transport options, the facilities available, as well as accommodation, restaurants and activities suited to your needs.
Hearing impairment
Both our tourist information offices are equipped with a magnetic induction loop, which is compatible with certain hearing aids fitted with a T or MT function, as well as with certain cochlear implants.
Instant transcription apps on smartphones can also make it easier to communicate with our advisers.
Intellectual or mental disability, or autism spectrum disorder
Our teams can offer you a personalised welcome and advice tailored to your needs. Sensory aids are also available to borrow from our offices, including noise-cancelling headphones and sunglasses. Seating is available so you can take a break if necessary. Coming soon: timers and stress balls.
Physical disability
Both offices are accessible to people with reduced mobility. Doorbells will soon be installed so that you can call on our advisers for assistance: to open the door at the Citadelle or to set up a portable ramp at the Bastion of the Standard. Seating is also available in the reception areas.
Visual impairment
Our advisers can help you plan your visit and guide you towards the most suitable experiences. Options include audio tours, boat trips, choral concerts and guided audio tours. The Wivisites app also allows you to follow a 19-stop heritage trail between the Marine and the Citadel.
