Description

If you take one of the sightseeing boats heading for the Lavezzi archipelago, you’ll have the chance to stop off at the main island (the only one open to visitors): Lavezzu. Once on the island, within the Bonifacio Strait Nature Reserve, you can explore the footpaths in search of the most beautiful cove and the most beautiful beach. You’ll walk amongst grey granite boulders of all sizes, some of them truly monumental. Achiarina Beach is the most beautiful and the largest. Enjoy its fine sand and turquoise water. Nearby are a maritime cemetery and a monument in the shape of an elongated pyramid, reminding everyone that the ship La Sémillante ran aground here in 1855. The bay is a popular anchorage and a paradise for snorkelling enthusiasts. Relaxing and swimming are a must in this enchanting spot. If you continue your walk, a keen eye might spot an elephant-shaped rock at the far end of another beach… Here, you’ll be spoilt for choice between the beaches and coves all around the island. Please note: the paths are narrow and sometimes stony (avoid flip-flops and pushchairs). There is no shade and no facilities. Lavezzu Island is a nature reserve with enhanced protection: it is essential to stay on the marked paths; it is forbidden to climb on the rocks, smoke, fish, pick flowers or collect shells, and, of course, you must not leave any rubbish behind as there are no bins.
