Description
The Domaine de la Murta is, above all, a family estate, with its roots in Figari, in Southern Corsica, nestled between the sea and the mountains. It is here, in the heart of a landscape of maquis, dry stone walls and sea breezes, that the story began in 1890, with the planting of the first vines for family use. At that time, the vines grew alongside olive trees, vegetable gardens and food crops, in keeping with a philosophy of self-sufficiency and respect for the natural cycle.
It was not until 1963 that the estate took on a more structured form: Joseph Cantara, grandfather of the current winemaker, decided to expand the business, thereby laying the foundations for what would become Domaine de la Murta. His love of the land, his expertise and his deep attachment to the Corsican region would leave a lasting mark on the estate’s identity.
In 2002, a new generation took up the torch and provided a decisive impetus: the vines were replanted, and the transition to organic farming became a natural step. By 2026, the estate will cover 12 hectares, set on clay-granite soil swept by the winds of the Gulf of Figari – ideal for producing wines full of character. Vermentinu, Sciaccarellu, Niellucciu and Carcaghjolu Neru: the Corsican grape varieties express their full character here, whilst respecting the natural environment and the island’s traditions.
