ESCALIER DU ROY D'ARAGON

The King of Aragon’s Staircase in Bonifacio, listed as a historic monument and a picturesque site in Corsica, is, according to legend, said to have been carved by hand into the limestone cliff in a single night by the King of Aragon’s troops in 1420. In reality, the staircase was actually carved out to provide access to the Saint-Barthélemy Well, a freshwater well. Unfortunately, the well is no longer in use today and the cave housing it is closed to the public. Comprising 189 steps, each as uneven as the next, it is as you descend them that you will be awestruck by a series of incredible views: a 180° panorama of the sea, Sardinia and the cliffs. Once at the bottom, you’ll be just a few metres above the sea on a path carved into the cliff face, walking alongside turquoise-blue water. Children who manage to climb these 189 steps are rewarded with a certificate in recognition of their courage! A unique experience in the Mediterranean that combines physical challenge with centuries-old history! Visiting this very special site requires a good level of fitness and adherence to safety rules. Please ensure you familiarise yourself with the visitor regulations for the Escalier du Roy Aragon before your visit. Access to the staircase is restricted to those wearing closed-toe, flat shoes (the following are prohibited: flip-flops, clogs and shoes with heels).
