The Bastion de l’Étendard Delve into the depths of Bonifacio’s military history through this iconic monument situated at the heart of the citadel. Explore its underground galleries, exhibitions and breathtaking panoramic views. The King of Aragon’s Staircase Clinging to the cliff face, this legendary staircase of 189 hand-carved steps leads you down to the sea. A spectacular descent, blending myth and reality, offering a dizzying view of the Strait of Bonifacio. A word of advice: leave your flip-flops at home! You must wear closed-toe shoes with flat soles. Our visitor advisors will be happy to provide you with a helmet at the start of your visit. It’s best to be in good physical condition to make the descent to the sea via these uneven steps, which you’ll then have to climb back up. You must accompany your children and use a baby carrier for children under 3 years of age. For safety reasons, dogs are not permitted to visit this monument. Le Gouvernail Nestled at the southern tip of the peninsula, this military post, hewn out of the rock in 1880, offers a glimpse into the ingenuity of the town’s defensive system. After descending a tunnel of 168 steps, an underground chamber offers breathtaking views of the sea, the cliffs and Sardinia.
